Anthropic Sets Up AI Advisory Council to Bolster Policy Influence in Washington

The San Francisco–based artificial intelligence startup, Anthropic, has launched a National Security and Public Sector Advisory Council as it seeks to deepen ties with Washington and allied governments while AI plays an increasingly central role in defense.

The new panel highlights AI firms’ growing efforts to shape policy and ensure their technology supports democratic interests amid intensifying global competition.

Anthropic’s move comes as rivals such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind step up engagement with governments and regulators, though neither has announced a dedicated national-security advisory council.

The council brings together former senators and senior officials from the Department of Defense and intelligence agencies, along with representatives from the Departments of Energy and Justice. It will advise Anthropic on integrating AI into sensitive government operations and on developing standards for security, ethics and compliance.

Members named so far include former Senator Roy Blunt, former Deputy CIA Director, David S. Cohen, and Richard Fontaine, who leads the Center for a New American Security.
