British-Nigerian heavyweight superstar Anthony Joshua could make his long-awaited return to the African boxing scene with a potential fight in Ghana on December 20, as part of a Matchroom Boxing event scheduled to take place at the Legon Sports Stadium in Accra.
According to BoxingScene, Joshua is being considered for the card, though an official confirmation regarding his participation will only come from the former unified heavyweight champion himself.
The highly anticipated event will be headlined by a thrilling light-heavyweight showdown between Craig Richards and Dan Azeez, while Indian boxing sensation Nishant Dev and rising heavyweight prospect Leo Atang are also expected to feature.
For years, Joshua has expressed a strong desire to fight on African soil, and Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has reportedly been overwhelmed by inquiries about the 34-year-old’s possible bout in Africa.
When asked recently by Boxing Social whether Joshua might step into the ring before the end of 2025, Hearn said, “Possibly.
“There will be no big-name fight this year. It wouldn’t be a headline, it wouldn’t be a pay-per-view, you don’t have to moan about it, it can just be part of something that’s already existed and on sale – so there would be no one moaning. It’s just part of the development of getting into position of being 100 per cent ready for the big gamble.
“If he fights this year, he won’t headline. We want to work almost in silence and improve, and get into the mode of being 100 per cent ready. This is about development and a bit of activity.”
Joshua’s potential appearance in Ghana would mark a symbolic return to his African roots and could become one of the most talked-about boxing events in Africa in recent years, further strengthening his legacy as one of the sport’s global icons.
