The Anambra State Government has shut down a suspected baby factory masquerading as a hospital in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area, in a major sting operation against human trafficking.
The illegal facility, operating under the name Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity, was sealed on Saturday following months of intelligence gathering by the Ministry of Health and security agencies. Located near Tansian University, the so-called hospital was found to be running with a falsified licence and operated by a self-acclaimed doctor from Delta State.
During the raid, five pregnant teenagers and ten others were rescued while key staff were arrested. Officials said many victims, aged 15 to 21, were allegedly held against their will, forced into pregnancies, and their babies trafficked through illegal adoption networks.
Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, who led the operation, described the syndicate’s activities as grave violations of human rights, warning that the government would no longer tolerate such criminal operations disguised as healthcare centres.
“This is a major win in our fight against child trafficking and gender-based abuse,” he stated. “We are committed to shutting down all illegal medical facilities and ensuring those involved are brought to justice.”
Dr. Obidike credited the success to collaboration between the State Health Facility Accreditation and Monitoring Unit, the Anti-Quackery Taskforce, and security agencies. He also urged residents to report suspicious healthcare practices to authorities.
The rescued girls and infants are currently receiving medical attention and psychological support, while a full-scale investigation has been launched. Suspects are expected to face charges related to human trafficking, illegal detention, and child exploitation.
