Amaechi Pledges Support for ADC Presidential Flagbearer, Urges Rivers Residents to Join the Movement

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has thrown his weight behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that coalition leaders will unite behind whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

Amaechi, who spoke at a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, emphasized the importance of a transparent and democratic selection process, insisting that fairness in the primaries would be key to ensuring full support from all members of the opposition coalition.

“We have agreed that once a candidate emerges through a transparent and credible primary, all of us will back that person fully,” Amaechi said.

Opposition Gears Up for 2027

The former Rivers State governor and one-time chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was blunt about the country’s current challenges, citing widespread hunger and economic hardship. He called on Rivers indigenes to join the ADC and help bring about political change at both the state and federal levels.

“Any Rivers man or woman who genuinely wants the best for this state and country should register with the ADC and be part of the movement to end this suffering,” he urged.

ADC: New Front for a United Opposition

The ADC has emerged as a political vehicle for a newly formed coalition of influential opposition leaders, aiming to mount a credible challenge to President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the next election cycle.

The coalition, unveiled on July 2, includes a heavyweight roster of former presidential contenders and seasoned politicians:

  • Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President
  • Peter Obi, ex-governor of Anambra State
  • David Mark, former Senate President and interim chairman of the coalition
  • Nasir El-Rufai, former Kaduna State governor

According to Mark, the coalition was formed to preserve Nigeria’s democratic future and prevent the consolidation of power under a single party.

“This coalition is not just about power. It is about rescuing our democracy from one-party dominance,” Mark stated during the launch.

A Widening Rift in the Opposition?

The growing alignment of opposition leaders under the ADC umbrella could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027. The involvement of figures like Amaechi, who was once at the heart of the APC, signals a deeper realignment and growing dissatisfaction within the political elite.

With party registration drives already underway and talks of a transparent primary process, the ADC coalition appears set on presenting a unified and formidable front in the upcoming election.
