The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully dismantled a notorious kidnapping syndicate responsible for a series of abductions in the Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim, and surrounding areas.
The operation, which resulted in the death of one suspect and the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and a significant amount of cash, has been hailed as a major victory in the state’s ongoing fight against crime.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the operation’s success in a statement on Monday, identifying the gang as the primary group behind the recent wave of kidnappings in the region.
“Following actionable intelligence, a joint tactical team raided multiple criminal hideouts in the Ikpe Annang, Ikpe Ikot Akpan, and Ikot Inyang areas within Essien Udim Local Government Area,” John revealed.
The operation took a dramatic turn when the suspects, in an attempt to flee, opened fire on the approaching officers.
“When the suspects sighted our operatives, they immediately resorted to gunfire in a bid to escape,” John explained. “Our officers responded swiftly, engaging them in a gun battle.”
The intense confrontation resulted in the wounding of all five suspects, who were later apprehended and rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, one of the suspects succumbed to his injuries.
Weapons and Cash Seized
During a thorough search of the suspects’ hideouts, security operatives recovered a range of deadly weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, a pump-action shotgun, and a locally made dane gun. Also recovered were various personal items, including a bag of crayfish, a tambourine, an electric power amplifier, a conga drum, and three GSM phones. Additionally, a substantial cash sum of ₦3,130,600 was seized.
In a statement underscoring the significance of the operation, DSP Timfon John emphasized the command’s determination to rid Akwa Ibom of criminal elements, warning others against engaging in illegal activities.
“Akwa Ibom is no longer a sanctuary for criminals,” John declared.

Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, commended the tactical team for their bravery and swift action, urging residents to remain vigilant and support law enforcement efforts.
He also called for enhanced collaboration between the public and security agencies in the fight against crime, assuring residents that the police would continue to intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks across the state.
