Aiyedatiwa frees eight inmates, reduces sentences for 35 others

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, marked his swearing-in with a significant act of clemency, granting freedom and reduced sentences to 43 prisoners.

Acting on the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Aiyedatiwa ordered the immediate release of eight convicts, while 15 death row inmates had their sentences commuted to prison terms. Additionally, 20 prisoners serving life sentences had their jail terms reduced.

A statement issued on Monday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, titled “Inauguration: Gov Aiyedatiwa Extends Mercy to 43 Prisoners,” highlighted that this decision reflects Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to justice reform.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, praised the move, stating, “This decision is a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and the potential for rehabilitation. It is His Excellency’s responsibility to ensure that our justice system reflects mercy and humanity.”

The move aligns with Aiyedatiwa’s ongoing judicial reforms. In October 2024, he swore in six new judges to strengthen the state’s legal system, emphasizing the significance of this appointment as a milestone in his administration’s history.

The Governor also reflected on the personal importance of his inauguration, recalling the late Governor Akeredolu’s wish for him to succeed him, a sentiment expressed on their first day in office. With his second term officially underway, Aiyedatiwa has clearly outlined his focus on justice, fairness, and offering second chances.
