AHF Nigeria joins calls for period equity on Menstrual Health Day

As part of activities to commemorate Menstrual Health Day on May 28, 2025, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria the country arm of the world’s largest AIDS organization will host awareness events at WAPI Secondary School in Calabar, Cross River State, and in the Karinmajigi community in Abuja.

The initiative aims to address the persistent stigma, cultural taboos, and lack of access to menstrual hygiene products that affect the dignity, health, and education of women and girls, while also contributing to increased vulnerability to HIV.

Menstrual Health Day, observed globally on May 28 each year, highlights the importance of menstrual hygiene management and advocates for greater access to menstrual products, education, and supportive policies.

In a statement, AHF Nigeria emphasized that women and girls especially in sub-Saharan Africa continue to bear a disproportionate burden of HIV. “Limited access to sanitary pads leads many girls to miss school during their periods, increasing the risk of long-term educational disruption and school dropout,” the organization noted.

Dr. Echey Ijezie, AHF Nigeria’s Country Program Director, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ending period poverty in Nigeria.

“AHF Nigeria is committed to ending period poverty through sustained investment in initiatives that close the menstrual health knowledge gap among young women and girls,” he said.

“We are also focused on dismantling the myths, stigma, and cultural taboos that undermine their wellbeing.”

The awareness events are expected to include educational sessions, distribution of menstrual hygiene products, and interactive activities aimed at empowering adolescent girls with knowledge and support.
