
Nigeria has lost one of its most celebrated literary scholars. Professor Emeritus, Biodun Jeyifo, renowned for his contributions to African literature, drama, and Marxist literary criticism, died on Wednesday at the age of 80.
The Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL) confirmed the news in a statement signed by its President, Professor Andrew Haruna.
“Professor Andrew Haruna, FNAL, regrets to announce the death of Professor Emeritus Biodun Jeyifo, FNAL, which occurred today, 11th February 2026″, the statement said.
Affectionately known as Professor BJ, Jeyifo began his distinguished career at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) before joining the faculty of Cornell University and Harvard University in the United States, holding dual appointments.
His scholarly work earned him global recognition, and he was widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in postcolonial studies. Generations of students and academics benefited from his research and mentorship.
Earlier this year, Jeyifo’s 80th birthday was celebrated with an international event at the Muson Centre in Lagos, which drew scholars and admirers from across the globe.
