In a groundbreaking move to transform the energy landscape, the Adamawa State Government has entered into a strategic partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to develop a massive 300MW solar photovoltaic (PV) farm, backed by a $1.9 billion investment.
The project, which promises to generate an impressive 40,000 new jobs, will span multiple sectors, including engineering, construction, logistics, and maintenance, significantly contributing to the local economy.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who announced the initiative on Monday through his official X handle, described the move as a pivotal step towards expanding renewable energy access and fostering sustainable economic growth in Adamawa.
The proposed solar farm, one of the largest of its kind in the region, will dramatically enhance the state’s electricity supply, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support Nigeria’s national goal of net-zero emissions by 2060. By promoting clean energy adoption, this initiative will help position Adamawa as a key player in Nigeria’s energy transition.
“The 300MW solar PV farm, coupled with a $1.9 billion investment, is set to create 40,000 jobs and provide a major boost to our economy,” Fintiri stated. “This project aligns perfectly with our industrialisation efforts and will attract foreign direct investment (FDI), further cementing Adamawa as an energy hub.”
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA), a key government body focused on improving electricity access in underserved areas, will be instrumental in the execution of the project. Working through public-private partnerships (PPP), the REA aims to close Nigeria’s energy access gap, providing reliable power to rural communities and supporting economic development.
This ambitious solar project builds on the REA’s success with off-grid solar solutions, mini-grids, and rural electrification, enhancing the economic resilience of remote regions across Nigeria. Beyond employment opportunities, the initiative will strengthen energy security, reduce electricity costs, and provide a solid foundation for industrial growth in Adamawa.
With this transformative initiative, Adamawa is poised to become a leading destination for renewable energy investments in Nigeria, setting the stage for a brighter, more sustainable future for the region.
