SERAP Warns NBC of Legal Action Over Ban on Song Criticizing Tinubu’s Governance

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a non-governmental organization, has threatened to take legal action against the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) following the ban of Eedris Abdulkareem’s song criticizing President Tinubu’s administration. The track, titled Tell Your Papa, is aimed at Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, who recently praised his father as the greatest president in Nigeria’s history.
This praise, amidst rising inflation and worsening security, has sparked backlash, with the latest criticism coming from Abdulkareem. The veteran rapper’s song is a direct message to Seyi Tinubu, urging him to convey to his father the reality of the country’s economic struggles.
The NBC banned the song, issuing a directive on April 9, 2025, under Section 3.1.8 of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, which deems the content “objectionable.” The commission argued that while the song has gained traction on social media, its lyrics fall short of the standards for responsible broadcasting.
In response, SERAP has given the NBC a 48-hour ultimatum to reverse the ban, threatening to take the matter to court if the decision is not overturned. Abdulkareem’s song, which is highly critical of President Tinubu for not fulfilling the promises made during his campaign, has become a focal point for those frustrated by the current economic and political climate.
Despite the ban, it’s unlikely that Abdulkareem will be deterred, as he’s known for using his music to address social and political issues in Nigeria.
