Lagos Police Ramp Up Security Ahead of April 7 Nationwide Protest

The Lagos State Police Command has issued a directive to all officers and commanders within its jurisdiction, preparing for a nationwide protest planned for April 7, 2025.

The Lagos State Police Command has issued a directive to all officers and commanders within its jurisdiction, preparing for a nationwide protest planned for April 7, 2025. This protest is organized by the Take-It-Back movement, Civil Society Organizations, and other groups, aiming to raise concerns about the misuse of the Cybercrime Act and the ongoing “state of emergency” in Rivers State.

The National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, confirmed that the protest will demand the repeal of the Cybercrime Act and the end of emergency rule in Rivers State, which they describe as a form of military dictatorship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Other key demands include the reinstatement of suspended government institutions in Rivers, including the State House of Assembly and the Executive.

However, the Lagos Police Command, citing intelligence reports, warned of potential disruptions. The police stated that certain groups, posing as civil society organizations, might use the protest to further anti-government agendas, focusing on issues such as the high cost of living and the suppression of free speech. These groups have been reportedly using social media to garner public sympathy and support for the protest.

The police also expressed concerns that criminals could hijack the protest, leading to attacks on government facilities and opposition leaders, which could disrupt social and economic activities across the state.

In response, the Commissioner of Police has ordered heightened security measures around critical infrastructure and strategic locations, including government buildings, media houses, transportation hubs, and key public spaces. Special focus will be placed on key protest convergence points like Gani Fawehinmi Park, National Stadium, Labour House, Yaba, Ikorodu Roundabout, and several other major locations across Lagos.

The operation aims to ensure that the protest remains peaceful, preventing any criminal activities and ensuring the safety of lives and property before, during, and after the event. A wide range of security forces, including the Rapid Response Squad, Counter-Terrorism Unit, and Special Protection Unit, will be deployed to maintain law and order.
