Sokoto Govt seeks partnerships to revive ailing industries

Governor Ahmed Aliyu has pledged that his administration is committed to reviving the state’s moribund industries to foster economic growth and reduce unemployment.

He made this statement when he received members of the Sokoto State Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture, who paid him Sallah homage.

Governor Aliyu expressed regret over the collapse of numerous industries in Sokoto, particularly those established in the 1980s and 1990s, which had once played a crucial role in generating revenue and creating jobs.

These industries, including ceramics, tannery, furniture, and fertilizer blending plants, were key contributors to the state’s economic prosperity. He acknowledged the impact the shutdown of these industries has had on the state’s unemployment rate.

“We are working hard to revive these industries through our ease of doing business policy, which aims to create an environment conducive to economic growth and industrial development,” he said.

The Governor reassured the Chamber of Commerce that his administration is ready to collaborate with potential investors to bring these industries back to life, thus contributing to Sokoto’s overall development. He emphasized that his administration has been proactive in building the necessary infrastructure to support industrialization, including the construction of high-quality roads.

He also highlighted the ongoing efforts to complete the Sokoto Independent Power Plant (IPP) project, initiated by the previous Wamakko-led administration. The successful completion of the IPP project, he noted, would enhance the state’s electricity supply and further stimulate business activities.

Governor Aliyu urged the Chamber to actively promote the state’s potential, especially in sectors such as agriculture, mining, trade, and commerce, to attract investors. He assured them of his administration’s full support in helping the Chamber achieve its goal of making Sokoto a thriving business hub.

Earlier, Alhaji Muazu Malami Maaji, the President of the Sokoto State Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture, commended Governor Aliyu for the significant transformation underway in the state across various sectors, which he said has the potential to attract investment.

He also praised the Governor for the urban renewal program that has given Sokoto city a facelift, encouraging citizens to appreciate the efforts made. He expressed gratitude for the Governor’s continued support and cooperation with the Chamber.
