A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning, destroying properties worth billions of naira at a recycling hub and market in the Dakata metropolitan area of Kano State.

The blaze reportedly started at the recycling hub, where plastics and scrap materials are processed. Witnesses reported seeing electrical sparks at nearby electrical poles, which quickly spread to the groundnut mill market, where food and provisions were sold.

Adamu Umar, a security guard at the recycling facility, recounted the events leading to the fire’s spread. On his first day in office, Kano State’s new Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Bakori, visited the scene and described the incident as tragic.

He confirmed that a looter, who had attempted to steal equipment from the site, was apprehended. Bakori assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The Commissioner also commended the quick response of the Kano State Fire Service, along with other private fire units, for their efforts in containing the fire.

Those affected by the devastating loss were seen in distress, with many calling on both state and federal governments to provide assistance in the wake of the disaster.
