Senator representing Kogi Central Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, made her return to the Senate Chamber on Wednesday as plenary resumed after a one-week recess. She was accompanied by her husband, who shared a brief but affectionate moment with her, giving her a kiss before she proceeded into the chamber to take her seat.
The Kogi senator took her place in a newly assigned seat, which has been the focal point of an ongoing controversy within the Senate. The dispute over her seating arrangement has fueled tensions, especially after Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment—an allegation Akpabio has vehemently denied.
Despite the heated controversy, Akpoti-Uduaghan appeared resolute as she resumed her legislative duties, signaling her intent to continue with her responsibilities despite the turmoil surrounding her.
Meanwhile, a group of protesters rallied in support of the Kogi lawmaker outside the National Assembly, as the Senate’s Ethics Committee, led by Senator Neda Imaseun, prepares to investigate her alleged failure to comply with Senate rules. The protesters, undeterred by the tear gas fired by security forces, accused Senate President Akpabio of silencing and maligning women. They further called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, framing the sexual harassment allegation as a significant human rights issue.
As the controversy continues to unfold, all eyes remain on the Senate and its handling of the matter.
