FAAN set to recertify Kano, Port Harcourt airports for global safety compliance

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that it is undertaking a recertification process for Kano and Port Harcourt airports to improve safety and ensure alignment with international standards.

This was revealed by FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, during a tour of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, accompanied by FAAN Board Chairman Abdullah Ganduje, on Tuesday.

Kuku emphasized that FAAN is focusing on enhancing security and upgrading infrastructure at key airports, including replacing outdated security equipment and introducing explosive detection devices. She also noted that terminal rehabilitation projects have already begun at MMIA, with additional large-scale developments planned for airports in Lagos and Abuja.

Ganduje, during his inspection of Nigerian airports, highlighted challenges such as abandoned projects and outdated equipment, stressing the importance of ensuring that airports maintain international standards

The recertification process involves submitting an aerodrome manual that outlines facilities, procedures, and safety management systems for regulatory review. Certification ensures airports meet global aviation safety standards, supports continuous monitoring, and helps improve operational efficiency in line with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Annex 14, Volume I guidelines.
