The Nigerian Government has called on retailers to pass on recent reductions in food prices to consumers, urging them to refrain from exploiting the public.
The Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Abubakar Kyari, made the statement on Tuesday at the 2025 Wheat Farmers Green Field Day in Dabi village, Ringim Local Government Area, Jigawa.
Kyari expressed disappointment over the reluctance of many retailers to adjust their prices despite significant drops in food costs, labeling their actions as “unpatriotic” and “unacceptable.” He pointed out that, while essential food commodities such as flour, sugar, rice, and pasta had seen notable price decreases, many businesses had not reflected these reductions in their sales.
“The Federal Government is aware of the considerable drop in food prices across major markets. However, it is troubling that several retailers, bakers, and shop owners have failed to pass these savings on to Nigerian consumers,” Kyari said.
He highlighted specific examples of price drops, including flour, which had decreased from N81,000 per bag to below N60,000, and spaghetti, which fell from N20,000 to N15,000.
Kyari emphasized that, after months of complaints from stakeholders in the retail sector about rising food prices, it was only fair and just that consumers should benefit from the current price reductions.
The minister reiterated the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure food availability and pledged to work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the market reflects the true state of food prices.
The event, aimed at highlighting advancements in wheat farming, was organized in collaboration with the Flour Milling Association of Nigeria, as well as the federal and Jigawa state governments.
