W.H.O Urges Countries to Expand Community-Based Mental Healthcare

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on countries to strengthen community-based mental healthcare to improve access to treatment and protect the rights of people living with mental health conditions.

In a new practical guide released, the organisation urged governments to move away from long-term institutional care towards accessible, person-centred services within communities.

The guide highlights the need for stronger mental health policies, adequate funding, community support services and housing assistance to help people recover and live with dignity.

WHO also stressed the importance of collaboration among healthcare providers, government authorities, families and people with lived experience of mental health conditions in shaping effective services.

The organisation said the transition would require careful planning and sustained investment to ensure continuity of care and prevent people from being left without adequate support.

The guide is aimed at helping psychiatric hospital leaders and policymakers develop more inclusive, rights-based mental healthcare systems.
