The ongoing legal battle over assets linked to former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has taken another turn, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), urging the Federal High Court in Abuja to disregard her acquittal by a UK court.
The commission argued that the June 17 judgment of the Southwark Crown Court in London has no bearing on Nigeria’s forfeiture proceedings.
The EFCC said the disputed properties were forfeited under final Federal High Court orders issued in 2019, which remain valid.
Diezani, through her counsel, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, is seeking the return of properties allegedly sold to third parties, claiming she was denied a fair hearing.
Justice Inyang Ekwo adjourned the case until November 11 for hearing of the pending applications.
