Rafael Leão handed Portugal’s No. 7 shirt after Ronaldo’s exit

UEFA has confirmed that Rafael Leão will wear Portugal’s No. 7 shirt in their next two Nations League matches following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from camp.

Leão, who usually wears No. 17, has been listed as No. 7 for Thursday’s meeting with Denmark in Copenhagen and Sunday’s home fixture against Norway.

Football transfer expert reported on Thursday: “UEFA confirm Rafael Leão has been listed as Portugal No7 for the next two games following Cristiano leaving.”

Newly called-up forward Fábio Silva has taken over Leão’s former No. 17 shirt.

The switch follows UEFA Nations League rules requiring the 23 players selected for a matchday squad to wear consecutive numbers from 1 to 23.

Ronaldo left the Portugal camp on Wednesday after remaining an unused substitute during Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Norway.

The 41-year-old had started the previous game, a 1-0 win against Wales that marked Jorge Jesus’ first match as head coach.

Portugal lead Group A4 with two victories and face Denmark at Parken Stadium before welcoming Norway to the Estádio do Dragão on Sunday.
