Nigerian singer Timaya has credited the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti with playing a major role in the growth and international recognition of Nigerian music.
Timaya made the remarks while speaking on an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, where he reflected on Fela’s influence on his generation and other Nigerian artistes.
The singer said Fela’s impact extended beyond Nigeria, citing the respect he continues to receive in other African countries.
According to Timaya, Fela’s contribution to Nigerian music was so significant that he could not disrespect the late musician or his family.
“Without Fela, nobody would have known us and we wouldn’t be here singing music. I call him Baba because he didn’t inspire only me and other Nigerians,” Timaya said.
He further claimed that Fela is highly revered in Cameroon and said a weekend radio programme in the country is dedicated to playing his music.
“For me, Fela is the greatest man. I can never in my life disrespect him nor his family,” he added.
Timaya’s comments come amid renewed discussion among Nigerian artistes over Fela’s influence and place in the country’s music history.
Afrobeats singer Tekno recently said Fela was not his “king” of Nigerian music, naming highlife legend Oliver De Coque as the musician he regards as his own musical king.
Tekno explained that he did not grow up listening to Fela and said his musical upbringing in northern Nigeria shaped his influences. He also clarified that his personal preference did not amount to denying Fela’s significance as a pioneer of Afrobeat.
Timaya’s remarks, meanwhile, underscore his personal view of Fela as a foundational figure whose influence helped shape the generation of Nigerian musicians that followed him.
