As artificial intelligence rapidly advances, the United States and China are creating a new framework to address potential AI-related incidents and exchange views on the technology’s risks and benefits.
The White House said the two countries agreed on Friday to establish a bilateral communication channel for AI incidents following talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The leaders also agreed to create a “U.S.-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue” focused on the risks and benefits of advanced AI, with the next exchange expected by November.
Ahead of the summit, Trump said, “Super Intelligence (SI) will be a big topic of discussion, but I want to leave it exactly where it is.”
Xi, meanwhile, called for the two countries to manage their rivalry while ensuring that AI remains under human oversight.
“We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control”, he said.
The agreement comes amid growing international concerns about the safety, security and increasingly autonomous capabilities of advanced artificial intelligence systems.
