The inaugural National Intermediate Games, originally scheduled for October 1 to 15, 2026, in Lagos, have been moved to the first quarter of 2027 to allow more time for preparations and ensure a world-class event.
The Lagos State Sports Commission communicated the decision to the National Sports Commission after a detailed assessment by the Local Organising Committee, the NSC and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist.
The review, conducted after the September 3 to 6 Joint Technical Meeting, examined venues, sporting events, technical standards, rules and regulations, and other key operational requirements.
In a statement signed by the NSC Special Adviser on Media, Office of the Director-General, Kola Daniel, and published on its Facebook page on Wednesday, the commission said the Games could technically go ahead but the available preparation time was inadequate to meet the expected standard.
“While the review established that the Games could technically proceed, it also determined that the remaining timeframe may not be sufficient to deliver the inaugural edition to the standard befitting Lagos and an event of national significance,” the statement said.
The NSC said the postponement was aimed at preserving the credibility and quality of the competition, which is expected to provide a benchmark for future editions.
“The postponement is intended to safeguard the quality, credibility and long-term success of the National Intermediate Games, which is expected to establish an operational benchmark for future editions,” it added.
Lagos State has restated its commitment to hosting the Games and will continue preparations with the NSC and other stakeholders until the LOC announces a new date.
The NSC also said activities under its responsibility, including accreditation, zonal team-sport eliminations and other technical operations, would proceed.
The Local Organising Committee will determine and announce the new date for the Games.
