The French Football Federation has withdrawn its backing for Gianni Infantino’s bid to secure another term as FIFA president in the March 2027 election.
The FFF said on Thursday that it was joining Belgium, Italy, Scotland, Sweden and Wales in ending their support for the 56-year-old Swiss.
FIFA confirmed last weekend that Infantino will contest the election despite criticism over his now-abandoned proposal to attract private investment into the men’s and women’s World Cups. He remains the only declared candidate at this stage.
FFF president Philippe Diallo said the federation no longer had confidence in Infantino’s leadership of world football.
“We believe that the trust placed in the FIFA president has been betrayed, and that the way in which the governance of world football is envisaged no longer reflects us,” Diallo said.
“That is why, by a unanimous decision of its members, the French Football Federation has decided to withdraw its support for Gianni Infantino’s candidacy for the FIFA presidency.”
