The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has decided against backing Gianni Infantino for another term as FIFA president, pointing to unresolved concerns about transparency and the governing body’s decision-making process.
The move comes months before the FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2027, with Belgium joining England and Italy in withdrawing support for Infantino.
FIFA confirmed on Sunday that Infantino would seek re-election, although no other candidate has so far declared a bid.
The Belgian association wants clarification on FIFA’s scrapped proposal to attract private investment for the World Cup and its decision to overturn the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun during the recent tournament.
Balogun was sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina and was initially expected to miss the following game against Belgium. FIFA later cancelled the suspension, prompting criticism after reports that United States President Donald Trump had contacted Infantino.
RBFA president Pascale Van Damme said the association had yet to receive satisfactory answers to its concerns.
The Belgian FA has asked for the Balogun case to be placed on the agenda for FIFA’s next council meeting on October 15, as questions over Infantino’s leadership persist among member associations.
