Nigeria has denied allegations that it was involved in the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, dismissed claims circulating on social media that the coup had the backing of ECOWAS and, by extension, the Nigerian government.
The minister described the claims as baseless and mischievous, insisting that Nigeria remains committed to democracy, constitutional order and regional stability.
He said Nigeria would never support any unconstitutional change of government, regardless of the country or individuals involved.
Enikanolaiye referred to Nigeria’s August 30 statement on the situation in Niger, which called for a peaceful and inclusive return to stability and constitutional order.
He stressed that Nigeria, as a close neighbour, seeks only peace, security, democracy and development for Niger, the West African sub-region and the Sahel.
The minister also urged Nigerians to disregard videos and narratives circulating online, describing them as attempts to sow discord.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, as well as the African Union’s zero-tolerance policy on unconstitutional changes of government.
According to him, Nigeria will continue working with ECOWAS, the AU and the international community to promote democracy, the rule of law, peace and stability across the region.
