Davido Hints at Stepping Away From Music: ‘I Won’t Be 40 Still Competing With Guys in Their 20s’

Afrobeats superstar **David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has suggested that he could take an extended break from music as he looks beyond competing with younger artistes.

The 33-year-old made the comment during an appearance on The Uncut Podcast, where he reflected on longevity in the music industry and the possibility of stepping away from the spotlight.

Davido said he does not want to reach 40 and still be competing directly with artistes in their 20s, citing American rapper Jay-Z as an example of an established artiste who has taken breaks from music.

“Music is my blood but I won’t be 40 years and still dragging with guys in their 20s. Jay-Z took a break and he is doing his thing,” he said.

The singer stressed that taking time away from music would not necessarily mean the end of his career.

According to him, the strength of his existing catalogue would allow him to return to the stage successfully even after a lengthy absence.

“I can take a 10yrs break and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue,” Davido said.

He went further to suggest that he could stop releasing new music altogether without losing the value of the body of work he has already built.

“I might decide not to make another song for the rest of my life, and nobody is touching my catalogue,” he added.

Davido also clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as an argument for established musicians to leave the industry.

Instead, he said a successful music career should create opportunities for artistes to diversify into other areas.

“All I am saying is there are other things music should be able to help you branch out into,” he said.

The remarks suggest that while Davido remains committed to music, he is increasingly considering the possibilities that come with building a career beyond constant recording and touring.
