REA Signs Fresh Deals to Boost Clean Energy, Agriculture, Innovation Across Nigeria

New partnerships target food security, youth empowerment, agro-industrial growth, and technology-driven economic transformation…..

The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has entered into two major strategic partnerships aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s clean energy transition, improving agricultural productivity, and expanding innovation-led economic opportunities nationwide.

The agreements, signed with the Nigerian Commodity Exchange (NCX) and the Young Innovators of Nigeria (YIN), signal a broader shift in the Agency’s national role beyond rural electricity access, positioning the REA as a key driver of sustainable economic development, industrial growth, and technology-enabled transformation.

One of the agreements focuses on strengthening Nigeria’s agro-industrial sector through renewable energy integration.

Under the partnership with the Nigerian Commodity Exchange (NCX), both institutions will collaborate on a National Collaborative Framework for Agro-Industrial Cluster Development, Renewable Energy Deployment, and Commodity Trade Formalisation across the country.

The initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda and seeks to modernise agricultural value chains using clean energy infrastructure.

The NCX, a Federal Government-backed institution responsible for facilitating transparent agricultural commodity trading, will work with the REA to deploy renewable energy systems that support commodity processing, storage, aggregation, trading, and export operations nationwide.

According to the Agency, the collaboration is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve value retention for farmers and agro-processors, strengthen food security, and increase Nigeria’s non-oil export earnings.

The REA noted that the partnership reinforces the growing connection between reliable energy access and agricultural productivity as critical pillars of economic growth.

In a separate agreement, the REA also partnered with the Young Innovators of Nigeria (YIN) to co-host and jointly implement the Technology Ecosystem Dialogue (TED), an initiative focused on advancing innovation, digital transformation, and clean energy conversations in Nigeria.

YIN is known for supporting young Nigerians, women, startup founders, and persons with disabilities through technology training, mentorship, STEM education, and entrepreneurship development programmes.

The organisation says more than 30,000 Nigerians have benefited from its innovation and skills development initiatives.

Through the collaboration, both organisations will jointly mobilise resources, engage industry stakeholders, and organise the Technology Ecosystem Dialogue annually, with focus areas including renewable energy, smart mobility, digital innovation, and sustainable infrastructure.

The REA said it will contribute technical expertise and institutional support to strengthen the clean energy and sustainability aspects of the programme, while also participating in policy sessions, exhibitions, hackathons, and stakeholder engagements connected to the initiative.

Officials say the partnership will deepen discussions around how renewable energy, emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment can work together to drive long-term national development.

Speaking on the significance of the agreements, the REA reaffirmed its commitment to building integrated development systems capable of creating inclusive economic growth, expanding productive enterprise, and supporting sustainable livelihoods across Nigeria.

The Agency added that the new partnerships reflect its evolving strategy of linking renewable energy deployment with broader national priorities such as food security, industrialisation, youth empowerment, innovation, and economic resilience.

As Nigeria pushes toward a more diversified and sustainable economy, the REA said it remains focused on building partnerships capable of delivering long-term impact across multiple sectors of national development.
