Tinubu Appoints 39-Year-Old Professor Segun Aina as New JAMB Registrar

Computer engineering expert replaces Prof. Is-haq Oloyede as tenure ends in July 2026….

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), marking a leadership transition at one of Nigeria’s key education agencies.

Aina will succeed Is-haq Oloyede, whose second term is expected to end on July 31, 2026.

According to a statement issued by presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga, the incoming registrar is a computer engineering scholar and systems expert with extensive experience in digital infrastructure, examination systems, and institutional reform.

The statement described Aina as a “distinguished academic” with a strong background in technology-driven public sector transformation.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, a Master’s in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University, United Kingdom. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at the Lagos Business School.

A professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Aina reportedly began his early exposure to JAMB operations during his National Youth Service year, where he gained hands-on experience in admissions processes and data-driven education systems.

The presidency said this early involvement influenced his later work in examination reform, ICT integration, and systems optimisation across education agencies.

With over 15 years of professional experience, Aina has worked across the intersection of technology, policy, and institutional development, advising both federal and state governments on digital transformation and operational efficiency.

He has also served as a consultant to examination bodies such as the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), as well as several state ministries of education, focusing on ICT systems, exam integrity, and digital process improvements.

At 39, he is set to become one of the youngest individuals to lead JAMB, a milestone the presidency highlighted as part of his appointment.

The statement also noted that Aina is a member of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the new registrar would build on the achievements of his predecessor and further modernise JAMB’s operations through innovation and digital reform.

Professor Oloyede, who has led JAMB since 2016, previously served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and held leadership roles within the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.
