Victoria Inyama Apologises After Backlash Over Comments on Female Circumcision

Nigerian actress Victoria Inyama has issued a public apology following widespread criticism over remarks she made in support of female circumcision during a recent Instagram live session.
Inyama had appeared on an Instagram live discussion hosted by media personality Daddy Freeze, where she described the practice as a positive personal experience, stating it was “the best thing” that happened to her. She also recounted undergoing the procedure while living with her grandmother in the village, adding that it made her feel empowered.
The comments quickly drew backlash online, with many condemning her stance and highlighting the harmful effects of female genital mutilation (FGM).
Responding in a follow-up video shared on Daddy Freeze’s Instagram page, the actress said she had since gained a better understanding of the issue and acknowledged that her earlier remarks were made out of ignorance.
According to Inyama, conversations with people in her close circle, including a medical professional, helped her grasp the severity of FGM. She explained that a midwife reached out to clarify the realities of the practice, noting that her own experience did not reflect the more extreme and harmful procedures many women endure.
She admitted she had previously assumed the practice was minor and was unaware that, in some cases, victims are subjected to more invasive procedures, including stitching.
The actress also shared that a prophetess she regards as a maternal figure recounted spending a week in hospital at age 15 due to complications from the procedure—an account that further deepened her understanding.
Inyama said her initial comments arose during a broader discussion about cultural beliefs and historical attempts to regulate women’s sexuality. However, she stressed that she now recognises the dangers associated with FGM.
Describing the practice as harmful, she apologised to those offended by her earlier statements and pledged to become better informed going forward.
The incident has reignited conversations online about the persistence of FGM and the importance of public awareness, particularly when influential figures speak on sensitive issues affecting women’s health and rights.
