Imo State to Launch First Robotic Surgical Centre, Boosting Healthcare Delivery

A landmark initiative in Imo State is set to bring artificial intelligence and robotic surgery to the forefront of healthcare delivery, following Governor Hope Uzodimma’s January 2026 announcement of a multi-partner plan to establish a world-class medical facility equipped with advanced robotic surgical technology, aimed at modernizing hospital services and enhancing patient care across the state.

To advance this vision, the Heartland Hospital Management Corporation (HHMC) convened a strategic meeting with key state health agencies at its headquarters in Owerri. The session brought together leaders from the Imo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (IMPHCDA), Imo State Specialist Hospital (ISSH), Owerri, and Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH), Orlu, alongside senior HHMC executives.

The discussions focused on the planned robotic surgical centre, hospital facility upgrades, modernization of medical equipment, and strategies to improve healthcare delivery across the state.

HHMC Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Emmanuel Ogueri, described the corporation as a flagship initiative of the governor’s administration, designed to streamline hospital management, enhance efficiency, and coordinate clinical services statewide. “We are a team committed to realizing the governor’s vision for healthcare. The transformation across sectors is visible in hospitals, and we must sustain this momentum through collective effort,” he said.

Chief Medical Director of ISSH Owerri, Dr. Chima Oparaji, praised the ongoing reconstruction works and the upcoming robotic surgical centre, calling them tangible signs of progress. He acknowledged past sector challenges but expressed confidence that Governor Uzodimma’s reforms would have a lasting impact.

Executive Secretary of IMPHCDA, Dr. Kosisochukwu Ekenjoku, emphasized the importance of continuous coordination between primary healthcare services and HHMC to ensure integrated and effective healthcare delivery.

Representing IMSUTH Orlu, Director of Administration Dr. Ben Bernard, commended the governor’s revitalization efforts and HHMC’s management, urging that policies be sustained beyond the current administration to prevent setbacks that have historically affected the sector.
