Ahead of Valentine’s Day 2026, the Federal Government has moved to curb the misuse of Naira notes in festive displays, warning that using cash for decorations, gifts, or party props violates currency laws and will attract penalties.
The ban specifically targets money bouquets, cash towers, cake designs, and other creative displays featuring banknotes. Authorities say these practices constitute defacement of legal tender and undermine the dignity and public value of the Naira.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) described the trend as a misuse of the national currency, emphasizing that folding, spraying, or shaping Naira notes for celebrations is unlawful. “The Naira is a symbol of our nation and must be treated with respect”, the bank stated.
Event planners, vendors, and individuals who ignore the directive risk arrest and prosecution under existing laws. Security agencies and regulatory bodies have been instructed to monitor parties, weddings, and street events where cash sprays or money-themed decorations are common.
Officials urged Nigerians to embrace alternative Valentine’s gifts such as flowers, greeting cards, or packaged items, stressing that celebrations should express love and joy without compromising the nation’s currency.
