ECOWAS to Host Forum for First Ladies on Gender-Based Violence in The Gambia

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set to host a forum focused on zero tolerance for gender-based violence, specifically for the First Ladies of SWEDD+ countries, from April 14 to 16, 2026, in Banjul, The Gambia.

In preparation for this significant event, a technical mission organized by the ECOWAS Commission’s Department of Human Development and Social Affairs, in collaboration with the West African Health Organization (WAHO) and Gambian authorities, took place in Banjul from January 26 to 30, 2026.

This mission is part of the implementation of the regional SWEDD+ project, which is supported by the World Bank and aims to empower women and girls while addressing gender-based violence throughout West and Central Africa.

The delegation included representatives from relevant ministries, the Office of the First Lady, technical and financial partners, as well as members of the national organizing committees. During the mission, they assessed the level of readiness for the forum, identified existing challenges, and finalized the technical, logistical, and institutional arrangements needed for the upcoming event.

This forum aims to strengthen regional efforts against gender-based violence and enhance collaboration among the First Ladies in promoting women’s rights and welfare across the region.
