A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa early Wednesday, prompting a swift security response.
The explosion occurred around 6:00 a.m., leading authorities to temporarily restrict movement in and out of the complex while safety and security checks were conducted.
The Bayelsa State Police confirmed that no casualties or structural damage resulted from the blast. Commissioner of Police, Iyamah, said security operatives quickly secured the area and conducted a detailed search.
“One unexploded IED was discovered by our Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team and safely rendered inert. No lives were lost, and no property was destroyed”, he stated.
Police also arrested a 60-year-old man, Pentecost Elijah from Otuan Community, Southern Ijaw LGA, in connection with the incident. He is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, after which he will be charged to court.
As a precaution, the Bayelsa State Government ordered a temporary four-hour suspension of activities at the secretariat, affecting over 6,000 civil servants. Roadblocks were established, and security personnel combed surrounding buildings to ensure no further threats were present.
After thorough checks, normal operations gradually resumed, with authorities assuring the public that the situation was under control and urging calm.
