Plans are underway to redevelop Makoko, Lagos’ waterfront settlement, with a $10 million regeneration project. After environmental reviews, the government has prioritized a water city project designed to modernize the area without harming the community or surrounding ecosystem.
The initiative will be funded with $2 million from the Lagos State Government and up to $8 million from the United Nations. So far, the government has focused on clearing structures within high-tension corridors to prevent accidents, while keeping the main areas of the fishing community intact.
The redevelopment plan originally included a shoreline extension, but it was set aside due to environmental concerns.
The water city project remains the key component, designed to be environmentally friendly and community-centered. Residents have been actively engaged in the planning process, alongside UN consultants.
Makoko residents recently protested against the demolition of structures along the power line setback, demanding compensation. In response, a committee from the Lagos State House of Assembly is scheduled to meet with community representatives this week to address their concerns.
