Cobhams Asuquo Questions Grammy Relevance After Nigerians Record No Wins

Renowned musician and music producer Cobhams Asuquo has expressed disappointment with the Grammy Awards following the outcome of the 68th edition, where no Nigerian artiste emerged as a winner.

In a video that has since circulated online, Asuquo spoke candidly about what he described as the Grammys’ relationship with Nigerian musicians. He suggested, in a humorous tone, that Nigerian artistes are often used to generate excitement and economic value in the United States without ultimately being rewarded.

“I think Grammy is using Nigerians to boost the GDP of Los Angeles,” he said. “It’s like a carrot dangling in front of us, and it goes away.”

Asuquo’s comments come amid widespread reactions after Nigerian nominees failed to secure awards at this year’s ceremony, despite strong representation across categories.

Beyond his criticism, the producer urged music stakeholders to redirect energy toward developing credible, world-class award platforms within Nigeria and Africa at large.

“I think we need to build something that is ours,” he said. “Let’s grow something that can make other people converge in our space.”

To further illustrate his point, Asuquo referenced American sports culture, highlighting the Super Bowl as an example of a globally influential event that remains firmly rooted in its home country.

“It’s only America that will do the Super Bowl and be playing it themselves,” he added.

His remarks have added to ongoing conversations within the Nigerian music industry about global recognition, cultural ownership, and the need to strengthen local institutions that celebrate African excellence on African terms.
