Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has signed an Executive Order banning masquerade displays on streets and major highways across the state, citing rising incidents of harassment, extortion, and public disturbances linked to such activities.
Eno, who first announced the proscription last week, reaffirmed the ban at a signing ceremony at Government House, Uyo, on Tuesday. He directed the Commissioner of Police and all security agencies to ensure strict enforcement.
“By my office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I am issuing an order that anyone caught violating this directive will be arrested and prosecuted. Masquerades have been used to wreak havoc in some local governments, and this must stop,” Eno stated.
The governor emphasized that while he values the state’s rich cultural heritage, no tradition should endanger lives or infringe on the rights of citizens.
Commissioner of Police Baba Azare praised the directive, describing it as timely and necessary. He noted that the order provides security agencies with clear authority to curb masquerade-related violence, intimidation, and obstruction across all 31 local government areas.
Azare further assured that enforcement has already begun, with area commanders and tactical units instructed to guarantee full compliance statewide, ensuring residents can enjoy peace and security.
