The Federal Government has debunked recent reports suggesting that the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited (ASCL) has deteriorated beyond repair, insisting the plant remains structurally sound and critical to Nigeria’s industrial future.
This was made known in a statement issued by Salamatu Jibaniya, Head of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Steel Development, who noted that public concerns over the company’s condition were not aligned with current realities.
“The attention of the Federal Ministry of Steel Development has been drawn to recent media reports regarding the future of the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited,” the statement began.
“While we note the concerns expressed, it is important to state that the Federal Government remains firmly committed to the development of Nigeria’s steel sector, including the resuscitation of ASCL.”
Technical & Financial Audit in Progress
According to the ministry, a comprehensive technical and financial audit of the Ajaokuta plant is currently underway. The aim is to base all government decisions on accurate, up-to-date data that reflects both the plant’s operational condition and investment needs.
“The ongoing audit will ensure that any decision taken is transparent, data-driven and in the best interest of Nigeria,” the ministry stated.
A previous technical audit conducted in 2018 concluded that the plant was in a “robust condition,” apart from expected wear and tear on certain replaceable components. The report also recommended that manual control systems be upgraded and automated for improved operational efficiency.
The Ministry of Steel Development reiterated that it remains confident in the potential of the Ajaokuta project and expects the current audit to serve as a springboard for decisive action.
“The ministry remains confident that the updated audit will provide a sound basis for decisive action that advances Nigeria’s industrial aspirations,” the statement concluded.
The Federal Government’s reassurance comes amid heightened public discourse over the fate of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant once envisioned as the cornerstone of Nigeria’s industrial and economic development.
