The Federal Ministry of Works is employing advanced engineering techniques, including geotextiles and rock layering, to safeguard the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway from ocean threats during its ongoing construction.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed this on Monday during an inspection of various road and bridge projects in Lagos State.
At approximately Kilometre 14.6, the ocean nearly breached the carriageway, posing a significant risk to the highway’s structural integrity. To counter this, the ministry implemented specialised reinforcement measures to stabilise the vulnerable section.
“This unforeseen challenge has consumed a portion of the project’s contingency budget,” Umahi explained.
The minister warned that ignoring the threat could have serious consequences for the entire highway project. He praised the contractor and supervising teams for their prompt and effective response, which prevented further ocean encroachment and preserved the project’s progress.
