His family confirmed his passing in a statement to Reuters on Sunday morning, though the cause of death was not disclosed. “He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come. We ask for privacy at this sad time,” the family said.

Tributes have since poured in from fans and colleagues alike. Actress Sarah Douglas, who starred alongside Stamp in Superman, remembered him as “beyond gorgeous and talented,” adding that she learned “so very much” from working with him. “What a start to my career to have spent so many months in his company. My love and heartfelt condolences to all who cared for him. What a loss,” she wrote on Instagram.

Stamp’s illustrious career spanned more than six decades. He made his screen debut in 1962 with Billy Budd, a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a BAFTA nomination for Best Newcomer.

His breakout role as the menacing General Zod in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980) cemented his reputation as one of cinema’s most compelling villains.
