Nurses, Midwives Suspend Strike After Agreement With FG – Health Minister

The Minister of Health, Prof. Ali Pate, on Friday announced the suspension of the strike by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) following an agreement reached with the Federal Government.

Speaking after a closed-door meeting with union leaders and government officials in Abuja, Pate confirmed the decision but did not disclose details of the agreement, as NANNM leaders declined to comment.

The nurses and midwives had embarked on a nationwide warning strike on July 29, 2025, accusing the government of ignoring a 15-day ultimatum issued earlier in the month. The strike, initially set to last until August 5, disrupted services in public hospitals across the country.

The union’s demands included:

Upward review of shift and uniform allowances.

Implementation of a separate salary structure for nurses.

Increased core duty allowances.

Mass recruitment of nurses across federal institutions.

Creation of a dedicated nursing department in the Health Ministry.

Before the agreement, NANNM National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, had accused the government of neglecting dialogue opportunities and said the strike reflected deep frustration among members over poor welfare and working conditions.
