Police Service Commission Enlists NDLEA to Purge Drug‑Addicted Officers from Nigeria Police

PSC chief Hashimu Argungu asks NDLEA to take part in every recruitment and screening stage to protect the Force’s integrity.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) says it will work with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to identify and remove officers who abuse drugs and to prevent new addicts from entering the Nigeria Police Force.

PSC chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd.) made the pledge during a courtesy visit to NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, where he met with the agency’s chairman, Brig‑Gen Buba Marwa (rtd.), and senior officials.

Argungu told the NDLEA leadership that the PSC wants the anti‑narcotics agency “fully represented” at every stage of police recruitment, from application screening to medical checks, adding that it would be dangerous to arm officers who are dependent on narcotics.

“We want you to help us fish out drug addicts who should never enter, or remain in the system,” the PSC chairman said. “We intend to get it right and make the Police work.”

He noted that previous NDLEA support during admissions into the Police Academy, Wudil, drastically cut drug‑abuse cases among cadets and should now be extended nationwide to all recruitment exercises.

Argungu also warned that serving officers found to be drug users would be flushed out, describing the practice of giving firearms to addicts as “a clear threat to public safety.”

Responding, NDLEA chief Marwa welcomed the collaboration and promised his agency’s full backing. “We will do our best to end this menace,” he said, stressing the need for intelligence‑sharing and joint training to strengthen the initiative.
