NiMet Forecasts Widespread Thunderstorms, Rainfall Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather outlook forecasting widespread thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and strong winds across most parts of the country from Monday, July 21, to Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

In its advisory released Sunday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account and website, NiMet warned Nigerians to prepare for unsettled weather conditions, especially in regions prone to flooding and storm-related damage.

Thunderstorms and light rain are expected Monday morning over Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna, with more widespread storms anticipated by afternoon across Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Zamfara, and other parts of the North.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, cloudy mornings will give way to moderate rains and thunderstorms across Kano, Bauchi, Yobe, Kebbi, Borno, and Kaduna, among others.

The North Central states, including FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Kwara, are projected to see cloudy mornings followed by afternoon thunderstorms throughout the forecast period.

NiMet noted particularly that Tuesday and Wednesday will bring moderate rainfall over Plateau, Niger, and Kwara, with the FCT expected to experience localized storms.

In the South, light to moderate rain is forecast throughout the three-day period. On Monday, early showers are expected in Akwa Ibom and Cross River, intensifying later across Edo, Ondo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Abia, Ebonyi, and Imo.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, heavier rains are likely in Abia, Enugu, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Delta, accompanied by possible thunderstorms and strong winds.

NiMet urged Nigerians to exercise caution during adverse weather events:

Secure loose items that could be lifted by wind.

Avoid driving during heavy downpours or wading through flooded roads.

Unplug electrical appliances during storms to prevent surges.

Stay away from trees and vulnerable structures during windy conditions.

The agency also issued a specific advisory for aviation operators, recommending they obtain location-specific weather updates to aid safe flight planning.

“Strong winds may precede rainfall in thunderstorm-prone areas. The public is advised to stay alert and follow NiMet’s updates,” the statement read.

NiMet encouraged the public to monitor real-time forecasts through its official website and verified social media platforms.
