In the wake of the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, four days ago, the nation continues to resonate with an outpouring of condolences and reflections. Among the notable figures paying their respects is former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who recently concluded a poignant three-day condolence visit to Daura, Katsina State, in the northwest region of Nigeria.

Accompanied by the former Minister of the FCT and ex-Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, Atiku Abubakar visited the late President’s hometown, Daura, to pay his final respects since Monday, July 14.

Sharing his heartfelt experience on his X handle, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar stated:

“This afternoon, I completed a three-day condolence visit to Daura, Katsina State, where I joined many other sympathisers for the third-day prayers in honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari. Before participating in the larger congregational prayers, I, along with former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, offered special prayers at the graveside of the deceased. Before leaving Daura, I visited Aisha Buhari, the widowed former First Lady, to express my condolences. Once again, may Almighty Allah forgive his sins and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. -AA”

A stalwart of Nigerian politics, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar served alongside President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007. His political journey includes earlier bids for the governorship of Adamawa State in 1990 and 1996, which were unsuccessful, but he secured the position in 1998.

Notably, Atiku Abubakar also contested against the late President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 and 2023 presidential elections under the ‘umbrella’ of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). However, his endeavours were not met with success.
