Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to decades-long political affiliation with the party he helped found.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and a departure from the party’s core values as the reason behind his decision.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter reads.
Reflecting on his long-standing role in the party, Atiku expressed gratitude for the platform it provided, noting his service as Vice President of Nigeria for two terms and two-time presidential candidate under the PDP banner.
“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he stated. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku concluded the letter by extending best wishes to the party and its leadership, thanking them for the opportunities and support over the years.
His resignation marks a significant political shift just two years before the 2027 general elections, with speculation already mounting over his next political move.
