Omorinsola Babajide Dedicates First Super Falcons Goal to Late Diogo Jota and His Brother

Super Falcons forward, Omorinsola Babajide, has shared the emotional significance behind her celebration during Nigeria’s 3-0 triumph over Tunisia.

Babajide played a crucial role in the Group B clash held at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, notching a goal and an assist. The former UD Tenerife player provided the assist for Nigeria’s opener in the 4th minute, setting up star striker Asisat Oshoala. She then found the back of the net herself in the 45th minute, scoring the team’s second goal of the match.

This marked Babajide’s first goal for the nine-time African champions in her five appearances for the national side.

Speaking after the match, the striker revealed that her goal celebration was a heartfelt dedication to the late Liverpool striker, Diogo Jota, and his brother.

“It was for Diogo Jota and his brother as well. That was like one of his biggest celebrations at the club, especially. We call it the signature celebration really,” Babajide explained.

Despite her strong performance, Babajide may face stiff competition for a place in the starting XI when Nigeria face Botswana in their next group fixture. Her replacement in the second half, Esther Okoronkwo, delivered an impressive performance, providing an assist and earning the Woman of the Match award.

Another substitute, Chiwendu Ihezuo, also contributed to the victory by scoring against Tunisia.
