Niger State Govt Shuts Down IBB University Following Deadly Security Breach

The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following a serious security breach that reportedly led to the loss of lives within the university community.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Usman, on Thursday. The closure, approved by Governor Umaru Bago, takes effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice.

“The safety and security of all citizens, especially our students and university staff, remain the utmost priority of the Niger State Government,” the statement read.
“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate incidents that necessitated this decision, and immediate steps are being taken to address the threat.”

The government did not provide specific details of the security breach, but sources indicate rising concerns over violence and threats within and around the university in recent days.

Authorities have urged students, staff, and residents of the university community to stay calm and cooperate fully with security agencies working to stabilize the situation.

“Investigations are ongoing, and anyone found culpable will be held accountable under the full weight of the law,” the statement added.

The government assured the public that measures are already underway to restore peace and order, with security operatives deployed to monitor and manage the crisis.

The shutdown has drawn attention to the broader insecurity plaguing parts of Niger State, where recent attacks by armed groups have raised alarms about safety in educational institutions and rural communities alike.
