Woli Arole Faces Backlash for Criticizing Women Who Choose Surrogacy

Nigerian comedian Woli Arole has sparked controversy after making remarks criticizing women who opt for surrogacy without medical necessity.

In an Instagram post dated June 16, 2025, Arole argued that surrogacy contradicts God’s design for women, blaming modern ‘wokeness’ for influencing women to reject carrying their own children.

He wrote, “Listen carefully, it is a blessing for a WOMAN to carry her baby in her WOMB. That’s how GOD wants IT. Don’t let WOKENESS derail you. Unless there are medical reasons, options like surrogacy, IVF, and adoption should be considered. You can’t just say ‘my BODY, my DECISION’ and choose surrogacy because you don’t feel like carrying a child. No! Your body is God’s TEMPLE!”

The post ignited immediate and widespread backlash online. Many social media users accused Arole of policing women’s bodies and reproductive choices, especially given that he has never experienced pregnancy himself.
