Yusuf Quadri Makes History, Wins Both Junior and Senior Titles at Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament

Teenage squash sensation Yusuf Quadri made history on Saturday at the fourth edition of the Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament held at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, by becoming the first junior player to claim both the Under-19 and senior men’s titles.

The 17-year-old prodigy demonstrated exceptional stamina and skill, defeating Nigeria’s No. 3-ranked senior player, Farouk Sulaimon, 3-1 in the men’s final. This impressive victory came just hours after Quadri secured the Under-19 title with a 3-1 win over Joshua Daniel.

“I played like a champion throughout the tournament,” an elated Quadri said.

“This motivates me to train even harder and come back stronger next year.”

In the women’s category, top-seeded Rofiat Abdulazeez continued to assert her dominance, overcoming Faridat Soliu 3-1 to retain her title in a hard-fought final. This marked her second consecutive triumph at the tournament.

“I knew it wouldn’t be easy,” Abdulazeez said. “But I stayed calm and stuck to my game plan. Faridat really challenged me, and I respect her effort.”

Soliu, who entered the final with high hopes, accepted the defeat with grace and optimism.

“It hurts to lose, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I’ll learn from this experience and return stronger.”

In the Under-19 girls’ final, Aisha Abdulazeez dominated Zainab Ishola with a straight-sets victory (3-0), capping off an impressive run throughout the competition to claim the junior title.

The President of the Nigeria Squash Federation, Mr. Boye Oyerinde, praised the efforts of the Lagos State Squash Association and Prime Atlantic for their ongoing commitment to developing the sport in Nigeria.

“The talent we’re witnessing is truly outstanding,” Oyerinde said. “This tournament continues to elevate players’ skills and performance. We are very optimistic about the future of squash in Nigeria.”
