Portugal Beat Spain on Penalties to Win Historic Second UEFA Nations League Title

Portugal made history by becoming the first team to win the UEFA Nations League twice, defeating Spain 5-3 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in the final at Munich Football Arena.
The match was a high-octane contest, reflecting the quality seen in both sides’ semi-final performances. Early chances fell to João Neves for Portugal, while Pedri and Nico Williams tested Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa in a lively opening.
Spain took the lead through Martín Zubimendi, who tapped in a cross from Lamine Yamal that Portugal failed to clear. However, Nuno Mendes quickly responded with a stunning solo goal—his first at international level—after surging forward to meet Pedro Neto’s pass.
Just before halftime, Pedri orchestrated another brilliant move, assisting Mikel Oyarzabal to restore Spain’s advantage.
In the second half, Portugal’s substitutions proved pivotal. Rúben Neves and Nélson Semedo added control, and Cristiano Ronaldo equalized with his eighth goal of the tournament, finishing from close range after a deflected Mendes cross.
With no goals in extra time—despite clear chances for both teams, including a near-miss header from Diogo Jota—the match went to a penalty shootout.
After seven flawless penalties, Diogo Costa saved Álvaro Morata’s attempt, and Rúben Neves converted the winning spot-kick, sealing Portugal’s second UEFA Nations League title.
