Unrest Erupts in Los Angeles Over Immigration Raids as Trump Deploys National Guard
Tensions flared in Los Angeles over the weekend as protests erupted in response to sweeping immigration raids and the controversial deployment of National Guard troops ordered by President Donald Trump.
Demonstrators clashed with police in the city’s downtown area late Sunday, prompting authorities to declare an unlawful assembly. Cars were set ablaze, and riot police responded with tear gas and crowd-control tactics as anger boiled over in the city, which is home to one of the largest Latino populations in the United States.
The unrest follows a series of federal immigration raids that led to dozens of arrests, targeting what officials described as undocumented immigrants and suspected gang members.
Civil rights advocates and local officials, however, say the raids are indiscriminate and heavy-handed, accusing the Trump administration of using the military to escalate fear and suppress dissent.
“This is not about public safety — it’s about political theater,” said protester Thomas Henning. “The National Guard is here not to protect, but to intimidate. We’re simply exercising our First Amendment rights.”
The deployment, carried out without the consent of California’s leadership, has sparked a sharp rebuke from Governor Gavin Newsom, who called it “a dangerous overreach” and “a serious breach of state sovereignty.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Newsom warned: “Don’t take Trump’s bait. Stay peaceful. Violence plays into his hands.”
As armored vehicles rolled through largely empty downtown streets and helicopters circled overhead, the standoff underscored growing divisions between the federal government and state officials over immigration enforcement and civil liberties.
The National Guard, typically activated under the direction of state governors, is now being used as a federal enforcement tool — a move that critics argue erodes long-standing norms and intensifies political polarization ahead of the 2026 midterms.
At the heart of the crisis is Trump’s renewed pledge to crack down on illegal immigration, a cornerstone of his second-term agenda. But the scenes unfolding in Los Angeles have reignited concerns about the militarization of domestic policy and the potential chilling effect on constitutionally protected protest.
While no fatalities were reported, several injuries and arrests occurred during the skirmishes. Local officials are bracing for more unrest in the days ahead as tensions remain high.
